Estimating global migration flow tables using place of birth data
نویسنده
چکیده
BACKGROUND International migration flow data often lack adequate measurements of volume, direction and completeness. These pitfalls limit empirical comparative studies of migration and cross national population projections to use net migration measures or inadequate data. OBJECTIVE This paper aims to address these issues at a global level, presenting estimates of bilateral flow tables between 191 countries. METHODS A methodology to estimate flow tables of migration transitions for the globe is illustrated in two parts. First, a methodology to derive flows from sequential stock tables is developed. Second, the methodology is applied to recently released World Bank migration stock tables between 1960 and 2000 (Özden et al. 2011) to estimate a set of four decadal global migration flow tables. RESULTS The results of the applied methodology are discussed with reference to comparable estimates of global net migration flows of the United Nations and models for international migration flows. COMMENTS The proposed methodology adds to the limited existing literature on linking migration flows to stocks. The estimated flow tables represent a first-of-a-kind set of comparable global origin destination flow data. 1 Wittgenstein Centre (IIASA, VID/ÖAW, WU), Vienna Institute of Demography/Austrian Academy of Sciences. Analysing Structures of Interregional Migration in England
A methodology for identifying key structures in migration flow tables is presented in this chapter. The tables contain flows of persons cross-classified by origin, destination and some other characteristic, such as age or ethnicity. This work is important for both understanding aggregate migration patterns in general and for estimating flows in the context of incomplete migration data. The rese...
متن کاملModeling Interprovincial Migration in China, 1985–2000
Using data from China’s 1990 and 2000 censuses, this paper examines interprovincial migration by describing its spatial patterns and estimating models based on the gravity approach. Between the censuses, interprovincial migration increased considerably in size and became more unidirectional and concentrated. Modeling results highlight the role of regional economic disparity and migration stock,...
متن کاملFactors Affecting First and Second Birth Intervals Among 15-49 Year-Old Women in Tehran
Background and Objectives: One of the most important determinants of the fertility level is the birth interval. Considering the importance of this issue, the aim of this study was to analyze the first and second birth intervals using shared frailty survival model and comparing factors affecting these intervals. Methods: Probability proportional to size stratified sampling was used to select...
متن کاملInvestigation of Surface Runoff of Plasjan River Using WetSpa Hydrological Model
In recent decades, water scarcity has become a global problem due to the growth of the world's population as well as the increase in per capita water consumption. Therefore, planning and managing water resources to prevent potential risks such as floods and drought in the future is one of the important measures of water resources management. One of the important measures to avoid potential risk...
متن کاملEstimation Of International Migration Flow Tables In Europe
A methodology is developed to estimate comparable international migration flows between a set of countries. International migration flow data may be missing, reported by the sending country, reported by the receiving country or reported by both the sending and receiving countries. For the last situation, reported counts rarely match due to differences in definitions and data collection systems....
